Music is Good for the Soul…Purpose!

If you know me, you know that I love music and come from an incredibly musical family. If you’ve ever been to my house, there’s no doubt you’ve experienced the all-out song and dance party. They’re epic.

I’m often asked if I listen to podcasts or audiobooks and in full transparency, not really. If my Air Pods are in and I’m not on a call, I’m listening to music.

The notion that listening to music can impact your mood is really no surprise; we’ve all experienced, at one point in time, sitting in the car when our favorite song comes on. Our eyes widen and we gasp with excitement and we start JAMMING OUT.

Total game/mood changer.

But listening to music isn't just enjoyable—it's research-based and GOOD for you, too! Research has found that it can help your brain process information more efficiently, increase your ability to cope with stress, support pain management and insomnia, and even help jog your memory.

Business owners…listen up. When I think about all the aspects of running a business, my mind starts spinning. Most are great and incredibly fulfilling but some are overwhelming and can be downright frustrating. We turn to books, consults, podcasts, etc.; all in hopes of finding the ANSWERS, the secret sauce to sustainability, efficiency, profitability and ultimately our vision of success.

I’m not suggesting that all of those resources aren’t excellent ones, I’m just here to add to your toolbox!

In a Berkeley study conducted in 2017, participants performed a series of creativity exercises that measured divergent thinking, the thought process of generating ideas based on exploring many possibilities, and convergent thinking, the thinking pattern that generates one single solution to the problem.  These thinking patterns were measured while the participant was exposed to either silence (the control scenario) or classical music. The results showed that those who were listening to music had significantly higher scores on creative, innovative and forward thinking, than those who’d performed in silence.

The moral of the story – music is good for the soul…PURPOSE. So, next time you are looking to get into a flow state of mind, overwhelmed with a challenge or setback in the business, or looking to tap into the implementation phase of your visionary mind…put on some tunes and lean into the flow!
